President-elect Joe Biden condemned violence over the weekend when supporters of President Trump clashed with counterprotesters in Washington.
“President-elect Biden continues to denounce all acts of violence,” Biden spokesman Andrew Bates told Fox News.
Bates added that Biden condemns “repugnant displays of white supremacy that were made in Washington, D.C., this weekend,” specifically referring to a sign that read, “Coming for Blacks and Indians first welcome to the New World Order.”
The “Million MAGA March” brought in thousands of Trump supporters to the nation’s capital on Saturday from across the country to show their support for the president, who is contesting the election in multiple states after the contest was called for Biden by multiple media outlets.
Marchers were met by anti-Trump counterprotesters in the evening, which led to violent encounters. Some Trump supporters who attended were harassed, doused with liquids, and had their Trump merchandise stolen and burned.
Affiliates of the Trump campaign and conservative pundits criticized Biden for not condemning violence sooner, arguing that he wasn’t doing so because some of the victims were supporters of the president.
Trump sent out a series of tweets over the weekend showing graphic footage of violence and accusing the counterprotesters of being part of antifa, an often violent activist group the masked supporters of which protest law enforcement and work to promote left-wing policies.
“ANTIFA SCUM ran for the hills today when they tried attacking the people at the Trump Rally, because those people aggressively fought back. Antifa waited until tonight, when 99% were gone, to attack innocent #MAGA People. DC Police, get going — do your job and don’t hold back!!!” Trump said.
Videos on social media showed clashes between demonstrators resulted in the two sides tradings blows, punches, and shoves. Police said they made at least 10 arrests associated with the pro-Trump march.
