New Mexico Democratic Sens. Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall called on Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt to resign Thursday.
“I’ve heard from thousands of New Mexicans who have made a strong case that Mr. Pruitt is not the right person for the job, and I agree. I believe it’s time for him to resign,” Heinrich, who serves on the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy, said in a press release.
Udall also called on Pruitt to resign for “the good of the American people.”
“I always believed Scott Pruitt would be a disaster for health and safety, but even so, I have been shocked at how brazenly he has abused the taxpayers’ trust, his office, and this administration. It’s past time for Pruitt to go, and I will be introducing a ‘Sense of Congress’ resolution calling on him to resign for the good of the American people,” Udall said in press release Thursday.
The Democratic senators are the latest elected officials to call for the embattled administrator to resign.
Pruitt came under fire after a report last week revealed the EPA chief was renting a condominium linked to a Canadian energy company’s lobbying firm during the same time he approved their pipeline extensions plan.
Pruitt paid $50 dollars a day to rent the condo, which is owned by the wife of the head of the lobbying firm Williams & Jensen.
On Tuesday, two Florida lawmakers became the first Republicans to call for Pruitt to resign.
President Trump has continued to express his confidence in the EPA chief, he reportedly called Pruitt after the controversial reports broke and reassured him that “we have your back.”
Trump also reportedly told journalists Thursday as he boarded Air Force One that he still has confidence in Pruitt.
