WHO: Bay Area Rapid Transit
WHAT: Since 2000, BART has spent more than $2 million on employee travel, according to travel receipts made public by the California Public Records Act. The expenses included trips to Hong Kong, London and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a $2,700 dinner for ten employees at Manhattan’s swank Gallagher’s Steak House.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: Excessive and unnecessary travel might help explain BART’s current budget woes. Facing a $310 million deficit in the next four years, BART is threatening widespread layoffs if it can’t trim $100 million in employee benefits.
