Born June 5, 1913, a North Carolina woman just turned 106 and gave God the credit for her exceptionally long life.
A resident of Halifax County, near the North Carolina-Virginia border, Ruth Hilliard also shared the Bible verse that she thinks about most in her old age, according to local WTVD.
Hilliard cited Psalm 91:15-16 as her favorite: “He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
The psalm, attributed to Moses, is famous as a message of hope in the midst of suffering. Hilliard said that God has shown her the importance of that verse as she’s gotten older.
Hillard continues to read Scripture regularly, despite her failing eyesight.
Hilliard, who was a schoolteacher, also advised young people to get educated and do well in their studies.
She has a son, three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
