The Howard County school system?s older schools are in need of renovations.

The School Board?s proposed 2009 fiscal year capital budget targets money for many schools, including $27 million for Mount Hebron High School.

Others targeted for renovations include Atholton High School and Northfield Elementary School.

Which schools are most in need of renovations?

» Diane Butler: “Mount Hebron [High] is in terrible shape. Northfield [Elementary] has been bumped from renovations numerous times. [Its] park is still not in, 30 years late. Many schools need technology upgrades.”

» Faenita Dilworth: “The present board works to fairly manage the distribution of funds for school renovations. As a new board member, I look forward to being a more intricate part of the process.”

» Allen Dyer: “In a time of limited funds, those schools with higher numbers of lower-achieving students should receive priority for renovations. Student needs should drive the board?s decision-making.”

» Ellen Flynn Giles: “Capital projects for student seats and state program requirements, critical replacement/renovation of school building systems, and projects identified through the ongoing facilities inventory and program capacity review are top priorities.”

» Betsy Grater: “I would have to visit each of the schools mentioned and others to determine which schools are most in need of renovations in order to answer this question.”

» Janet Siddiqui: “Facility assessments and long-range planning help to prioritize the cycling of renovations and repairs. … Any urgent maintenance issues that affect [children?s safety] and … educational program [delivery] require immediate attention.”

» Di Zou: “The oldest schools are most in need of renovation. … We need preventive renovation to make sure a situation like Mount Hebron [High] never happens again.”
