White House fends off questions about Trump’s use of ‘breeding’ in border tweet

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders fended off questions Monday about whether President Trump was referring to sexual reproduction when he used the word “breeding” in a tweet about immigration enforcement.

“When you think of breeding, you think of animals breeding, copulating,” a journalist told Sanders at the daily White House press briefing.

“I’m not going to begin to think what you think,” Sanders responded. “Certainly I think it could mean a lot of things to a lot of people. But the president is talking about a growing problem.”

Trump used the word in a Wednesday tweet about California officials not cooperating with federal authorities on immigration enforcement.

Trump tweeted: “There is a Revolution going on in California. Soooo many Sanctuary areas want OUT of this ridiculous, crime infested & breeding concept. Jerry Brown is trying to back out of the National Guard at the Border, but the people of the State are not happy. Want Security & Safety NOW!”

Sanders was asked repeatedly at the Monday briefing about the tweet.

In the final attempt, a journalist asked Sanders, “He’s not talking about people having babies?”

“Not that I’m aware of,” Sanders said. “I would have to ask him to dig into that deeper.”
