March to honor recent hate crimes

D.C. residents are planning a march on Tuesday to honor the victims of three recent hate crimes in Columbia Heights.

The “Silent March for Victims of GLBT Violence” will begin at 7 p.m. at the IHOP restaurant at 14th and Irving streets NW, where a gay man was shot in the chest on March 11.

Witnesses of the crime said the suspect used an anti-gay slur before firing a shot at the 31-year-old victim. Police classified the incident as a hate crime.

The march also supports a gay man who was left with a broken jaw after he was robbed and beaten on March 12 at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Irving Street NW. The incidence was classified as an anti-gay hate crime. The following day, a transgender woman was knocked unconscious in Northeast Washington.

The march will help raise money for one of the victim’s hospital bills.
