Fairfax County forklift operator dies after beam falls on him

A forklift operator died in an accident while on the job, Fairfax County police said.

Shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the 4100 block of Lafayette Center Drive in Chantilly.

An investigation revealed that a forklift being operated by Gerardo Santiago Paulette Ruiz, 47, struck an overhead beam while Ruiz was trying to go through a doorway in a warehouse area of a business called The Teaching Company. The beam fell onto Ruiz and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ruiz, who is from Herndon, was a longtime employee of the company, police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt said.
