‘Absolutely not’: Richard Shelby says Democrats don’t have higher moral standards for lawmakers than Republicans

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby denied that Democrats have a higher moral standard for their politicians than Republicans after the resignations of Sen. Al Franken and Rep. John Conyers for sexual harassment allegations.

Franken and Conyers both resigned last week due to sexual misconduct allegations made against them by multiple women. At the same time, Roy Moore continues to run for Senate in Alabama with the support of the Republican Party and Donald Trump — accused by 19 women of sexual assault during last year’s election — serves as president.

Shelby said these contrasts don’t add up to the full picture.

“Absolutely not. You will see all this play out. I believe whether you have a Republican, Democrat, independent, whatever you are, that you would not put up with the conduct, the bad conduct, from a Democrat or Republican,” Shelby said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Shelby didn’t point it out, but the Republican Party also pushed out one of their own last week when Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., resigned. Franks admitted to asking two former staffers to serve as surrogates for him and his wife as the couple has struggled with infertility.

Franks was encouraged by Speaker Paul Ryan to resign after receiving a report on the offer.
