Former White House chief of staff John Kelly reportedly made a deal with President Trump before he left his White House position.
The two had a strained relationship when Kelly announced his resignation in December, and Trump inquired whether the retired four-star general would be writing a tell-all book about his time in the White House.
Kelly told Trump that he did plan to write a memoir for “history’s sake,” CNN reported Wednesday. He promised not to release the book until Trump was out of the White House, unless Trump attacked him. A source close to Kelly said the conversation with Trump was amicable.
Trump has already had a slew of former aides write scathing tell-all accounts of their time working for the president, including Omarosa Manigault Newman and Cliff Sims. Both of the former staffers have been involved in legal disputes with Trump and his campaign since the release of their books, after Manigault Newman and Sims were accused of violating nondisclosure agreements.
