A Parkvilleman was in jail Wednesday on charges he was intoxicated when he nearly plowed his car into a police officer outside an elementary school, authorities said.
Marquis Kearney, 22, of the 1700 block of Chestnut Oak Road, faces numerous charges after the incident Tuesday afternoon outside White Oak School, in which a Baltimore County police officer fired his gun at the hood of the car as it accelerated toward him, police said.
The incident began at about 2:55 p.m. Tuesday, as students were climbing onto school buses and the officer was directing traffic nearby at Leefield Road and White Oak Avenue, Cpl. Michael Hill said.
The officer heard and spotted the car barreling down the road in his direction and tried to get the driver to slow down, Hill said, but the car went right past. Kearney nearly hit a student before turning around and speeding back out toward the officer, he said.
The officer fired his gun before Kearney got away, Hill said. Police caught up with Kearney on Loch Raven Boulevard as he tried to drive onto a sidewalk and avoid stopped traffic, he said.
Kearney, who is charged with attempted murder, assault and driving under the influence, told police he was “afraid of getting arrested for having a beer in the car,” Hill said.
Police would identify the officer involved in the incident only as Officer Brown.
