Award-winning folk musician Robin Bullock rarely concerns himself with the speed, complexity or virtuosity of his guitar playing. Even if the critics do.
“I?m interested in the beauty and the tradition of the instrument,” he said. “And taking the audience to a magical place.”
That?s probably why his fans have highly anticipated hisreturn to Baltimore. It?s easy to appreciate this prolific composer?s evocative works, presented in combination with the ancient melodies of the Celtic lands and their vigorous Appalachian descendants. For him, each performance is “a journey to the heart and soul of Celtic
With seven CD?s under his belt, Dirty Linen, The Magazine of Folk and World Music has referred to him as a “? rare combination of technical virtuosity and emotional nuance.”
Bullock agrees.
“Recording is the definitive documentation of the most perfect version of a piece,” he said. “But live performance is the magical interaction of performer and audience.”
The dynamics, he said, are determined by the mood of the moment and with an audience, he never knows for sure where the music is going to go.
Bullock, who resides in the village of Tripleval, located 40 miles outside of Paris, occasionally works there in duos with flute player Michael Sikiotakis. He most enjoys, however, the monthlong tours, three or four times a year throughout the United States. These gigs, among other things, allow him to visit family and “leave his audiences with an emotional experience.”
An die Music owner and Director Henry Wong has booked Robin Bullock twice in the past to sell-out crowds.
“His performance should be everyone?s top five concert experience in 2007,” he said.
