Maryland set a state record with 302 teachers earning certification this year from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, according to the state education department.
The program takes more than a year to complete and requires teachers to show how their activities boost student achievement and improve behavior.
The state ranks 15th in the country with 1,366 nationally certified teachers, making up less than 3 percent of the Maryland’s nearly 60,000 classroom teachers.
Last year, 227 Maryland teachers gained certification; the year before, 161.
