White House may rescind Sam Clovis as agriculture nominee due to Russia probe: Report

President Trump may rescind his nomination of Sam Clovis as chief scientist at the Department of Agriculture as a result of being pulled into special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, according to a report published Thursday.

Clovis also has the option of withdrawing himself if Trump does not cut the cord before then, according to a White House source who spoke with CNN.

Clovis was named in court documents as one of the people who corresponded with recently charged Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, according to a Washington Post report.

Clovis’ attorney has maintained his client opposed Papadopoulos’s request to visit government officials in Russia, but could not prevent him from traveling there.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Wednesday she was “not aware of any change that would be necessary,” when asked about Clovis’s nomination to the department.
