President Joe Biden signaled he was prepared to blame Republicans if his legislative agenda addressing immigration, gun control, climate change, and voting rights stalls in Congress.
“I think my Republican colleagues are going to have to determine whether or not we want to work together,” he said Thursday, claiming they were embroiled in “politics of division.”
“I’m going to move forward and take things as they come,” he added.
SIGNS OF DISSENSION IN DEMOCRATIC RANKS COULD COMPLICATE BIDEN AGENDA
Biden repeated that he had been elected to “solve problems,” but his priorities were managing the public health and economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic. Immigration and gun control reform were “long-term problems” he would deal with eventually, he said.
“We’re going to move on these, one at a time, try to do as many simultaneous as we can,” he added.
Biden made the comments during his first solo press conference at the White House, held 64 days into his presidency. He was repeatedly peppered on his position regarding the Senate’s filibuster, which means 60 votes are required to pass legislation. Democrats currently only have 51 votes in the chamber, including Vice President Kamala Harris’s tiebreaking vote.

Earlier in his remarks, Biden announced he was increasing his COVID-19 vaccination target to 200 million shots within his first 100 days in office.
