Nearly 21 million people went through BWI in ?06

Nearly 21 million passengers flew in and out of the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in 2006, a record amount of passenger traffic.

Gov. Martin O?Malley said the 2006 figure of 20.69 million represents a 4.8 percent increase from 2005.

“Our No. 1 goal moving forward is to continue to improve customer services and make BWI Marshall the most convenient airport in the region,” O?Malley said in a statement.

Airport officials recently completed a major expansion program with more than $1.4 billion worth of improvements; the latest includes a new terminal roadway and curbside and skywalk expansion. The changes increased the airport?s ability to accommodate long-term growth, airport officials said.

During the last five or six years, changes to the parking and terminal facilities have improved customer services, and more parking changes are planned to that end, airport spokesman Jonathan Dean said.

Southwest, the airport?s leading carrier in 2006, served more than 10.69 million passengers, more than half of the airport?s passenger traffic.
