Update: Dogs that survived high-speed chase in RV on the mend

Two dogs injured in a high-speed chase in California on Tuesday are recovering with care from animal services.

One dog broke its bones and had casts placed on two of its legs, according to pictures released by Los Angeles Animal Services. The second dog sustained lesser injuries. Three people were hospitalized after the incident, according to KABC Los Angeles.

“It really seems like a miracle that no one was killed in this pursuit,” ABC 7’s Rob Hayes said. “Two dogs inside that RV were hurt. Three people were hospitalized, including one man” who broke several ribs and suffered a collapsed lung when the RV struck his car.

Julie Ann Rainbird, 52, allegedly stole an RV and led police on a high-speed chase through California’s San Fernando Valley. Two dogs were in the RV when the vehicle took off. The driver plowed into six cars and a tree, tearing off the part of the vehicle’s front end.

One dog jumped out of the vehicle’s busted windshield in the middle of the chase. The second dog stayed in the RV until the driver crashed it and took off on foot. The dog followed, leaving behind bloody footprints.

Police apprehended the driver trying to jump over a fence.

Helga Schank, Rainbird’s past neighbor, told KABC that Rainbird had many run-ins with the police growing up, usually involving drugs.

“I don’t know too much about it, but I know she had a lot of trouble with drugs,” Schank said.
