Active duty Marine shot multiple times outside Georgia apartment complex

An active duty Marine, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, was shot and killed while he was on liberty on Sunday.

The Telegraph reports Pvt. Anahitdeep S. Sandhu, 20, of Kent, Wash., was shot outside a Georgia apartment complex while visiting friends or family. He was rushed to a nearby emergency room where he was pronounced dead.

Sandhu, who had no deployments, was assigned to Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224, Marine Aircraft Group 31, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort where he served as an aircraft ordnance technician.

“Our deepest condolences are with Private Anahitdeep Sandhu ‘s family, friends and fellow VMFA(AW)-224 Marines and Sailors,” Lt. Col. Joshua Pieczonka, Sandhu’s commanding officer, in a statement to The Telegraph. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this extremely difficult time. The command’s priority is to take care of this Marine’s family and affected fellow Marines and Sailors.”

The Perry Police Department announced they had arrested suspect Quavion Shaquil Rountree, 25, who lived in the apartment complex, for the murder on Tuesday.

The Marine Corps Times reports Sandhu’s unit is currently conducting training in Idaho, but he was part “the unit’s remain behind element” at MCAS Beaufort. It remains unclear what led to the shooting and it appears Rountree and Sandhu did not know each other.
