ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) — Two Howard County high school students arrived at school with Confederate flags draped over their shoulders just days after a fellow student was disciplined for displaying the divisive symbol.
Howard schools spokeswoman Rebecca Amani-Dove says the Glenelg High School students displayed the flags on campus before the opening bell Wednesday.
She tells The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1BubUE1 ) that the students complied after being told to remove them, and that things have been calm.
The incident comes after a Glenelg student was disciplined for unfurling a Confederate flag while standing atop stadium bleachers during the school’s football game against River High School last Friday.
Amani-Dove declined to say how the student was disciplined.
Amani-Dove says carrying a Confederate flag isn’t illegal, but school administrators can take action against “anything that causes disruption.”
