RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Its 121 Civil War flags give the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh the third-largest collection in the world, but not all are on exhibit.
That’s because it costs about $7,000 to conserve each of the 112 Confederate and nine Union flags. The museum has started working with other groups to conserve the flags and now has the money to save or has saved 14.
Museum associate director Jackson Marshall will talk about preserving the flags during a lunchtime program Wednesday at the museum. Admission and beverages are free. Participants should bring lunches.
The state’s largest Civil War re-enactment group, the 26th North Carolina Regiment, has worked with the museum to conserve six flags.
