HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — City officials say 30 apartments in Hampton have been condemned due to flooding caused by heavy rains.

Parts of Hampton got more than 10 inches of rain between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday, while most of the city got between 5 and 6 inches of rain. Widespread street flooding was also reported in many other areas of Hampton Roads.

Emergency officials used boats to evacuate several residents of the Paula Maria Village apartments, when water flooded several first-floor apartments. The city says the complex is home to many elderly and disabled residents and was without power Tuesday morning.

The city says Century Plaza Apartments and some nearby homes were also affected.

Residents were evacuated to the Northampton Community Center, which served as a temporary day shelter.
