Heat fells festival goers

Near record-breaking heat left about 20 people in Anne Arundel County in need of medical attention for heat-related illnesses.

Most of the victims were at the Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville over the weekend, said Lt. Roy Phillips, spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire and EMS Department. No serious injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service marked Saturday?s high temperature at BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport at 96 degrees, one degree off the record set in 1968 and 11 degrees above the average.

The high heat gave way to violent thunderstorms, which knocked power to 32,000 Baltimore Gas and Electric customers, most in Anne Arundel County.

Phillips said at least two Anne Arundel houses were struck by lightning, but none suffered significant damage. ? Jason Flanagan
