The White House is said to be considering banning all staff from using personal cellphones at work over concerns about cybersecurity.
Bloomberg reported that White House chief of staff John Kelly is leading the push for the ban, after his personal phone was suspected to have been breached.
One official told Bloomberg part of the concern stems from the number of devices connected to the White House wireless network and that personal devices aren’t as secure as ones issued by the government.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner regarding the potential ban.
A report in October revealed that Kelly’s phone had possibly been compromised for months. He turned it in to White House tech support over the summer, complaining it hadn’t been working properly. Before Kelly became White House chief of staff in July, he was secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
President Trump in the past railed against leaks to the press coming from inside his administration, and former press secretary Sean Spicer even demanded staffers turn over their personal devices in the early months of the administration to see if they had leaked any information. One official told Bloomberg the potential ban is not related to concerns about White House staff leaking to the media.
