Sen. Lindsey Graham, S.C., says it is “okay” that Meghan McCain took thinly veiled swipes at President Trump during this weekend’s memorial service for her father, Sen. John McCain.
A close friend of the late McCain, Graham explained on “Fox News Sunday” that it should be no surprise that a loving daughter should rebuke a president who often feuded with her father.
“If you say something bad about Megan’s father, you will know it, she didn’t like it. So it’s okay. She’s grieving,” Graham said. He added later that the memorial was a “civic lesson” for everyone, “including President Trump.”
During the memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Meghan McCain took a shot at Trump’s “Make America great again” slogan, saying, “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great.”
Earlier in her remarks, McCain appeared to take a dig at Trump when she said her father was truly great, and didn’t just spew “cheap rhetoric” like others do.
“We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness. The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly. Nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who live lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served. He was a great fire who burned bright,” she said.
