EEOC looking at practice of credit checks screening

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced it will hold a meeting Wednesday to investigate the practice of using credit histories as employment screening devices.

Screening for credit history has been an issue in employment law and Congress, most recently in a proposed amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Last month, the House Financial Services Committee conducted a hearing to discuss the Equal Employment for All Act, a bill amending the Fair Credit Reporting Act to make it unlawful to discriminate against job applicants based solely on consumer credit reports. (There are some exceptions to the proposed act.)

The EEOC last held a meeting on credit checks in 2007. No action was taken.

Wednesday’s meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the EEOC’s meeting room on the first floor of its office building at 131 M St., NE.
