After Rep. Eric Swalwell officially ended his presidential campaign on Monday, several former 2020 presidential rivals thanked him for primarily running his campaign on the issue of gun control.
The California Democrat received praise from former Vice President Joe Biden.
His leadership on the House Intelligence Committee and his influential voice pushing the Trump Administration to secure our elections have helped make clear the stakes for our country in next year’s election.

During Swalwell’s only debate appearance, he went after Biden’s age, saying he saw him when he was a senator at the California Democratic Convention when he was only six years old. Swalwell twisted the knife when he then used Biden’s words of “passing the torch” during that appearance.
“Joe Biden was right when he said that 32 years ago. He is still right today. If we are going to solve the issue of automation, pass the torch. If we are going to solve elimate chaos, pass the torch,” Swalwell said.
In addition to proposing a ban and buy back of “assault weapons,” other proposals in Swalwell’s extensive gun control plan included:
- Prohibit individuals from purchasing more than one handgun per 30-day period.
- Prohibit the online sale of ammunition.
- Ban and buy back bump stocks, large-capacity magazines that are capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition, and suppressors .
- Prohibit individuals from hoarding ammunition in quantities exceeding 200 rounds per caliber or gauge.
Swalwell’s polling barely moved from 0%. He remained at 0%, even appearing as an asterisk in a CNN poll after the first Democratic primary debate.
