Woman charged for Boston Children’s Hospital bomb threat hoax

The FBI arrested a Massachusetts woman in connection with a bomb threat made against Boston Children’s Hospital last month.

U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Rachael Rollins announced the arrest of Catherine Leavy, who allegedly made the call to the hospital on Aug. 30 claiming there was a bomb headed to the hospital.

“She was arrested at her home earlier today, and the phone allegedly used to make the threat was recovered,” Rollins said at a press conference Thursday.

Leavy allegedly called the hospital and said, “There is a bomb on the way to the hospital. You better evacuate everybody. You sickos.” The FBI says officials tracked the T-Mobile phone making the call back to Leavy. She has been charged with one count of making a false telephonic bomb threat and faces up to five years in prison.

Rollins did not say what Leavy’s motive was but did hint it may be related to the hospital’s controversial procedures for transgender youth, which she has previously defended.

“While I cannot comment further on the alleged motive of this case, I want to say generally that healthcare providers who support and offer care to gender-diverse and transgender individuals and their families deserve to do so without fear,” Rollins said.

The Aug. 30 bomb threat set off evacuations and lockdowns for the hospital, with authorities later concluding the threat was fake.
