The transportation secretary says new work rules will give air traffic controllers will have more time to rest between shifts, after several controllers around the country were caught snoozing on the job.
Secretary Ray LaHood announced new rules on Sunday, which will give air controllers at least nine hours between shifts, compared with eight now.
He said the rules will not allow controllers to take time off during their shifts to nap, even though studies prove it could beneficial.
“We are not going to pay controllers to be napping,” LaHood said.
