Meta to open physical store on Facebook campus

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is opening its first physical retail space.

The store will open on May 9 on the Meta campus in Burlingame, California. It will be used by the Big Tech company to promote an assortment of products Meta intends to use for accessing its version of the metaverse.

“Once people experience the technology, they can gain a better appreciation for it. If we did our job right, people should leave and tell their friends, ‘You’ve got to go check out the Meta Store.’” said Martin Gilliard, head of Meta Store, in a blog post.

The store will be housed in a 1,550-square-foot space and house several of Meta’s AR- and VR-specific products, including the Meta Quest 2 headset, Ray-Ban shades with built-in cameras, and the Portal video-call system.

The store includes the opportunity to try out the company’s various apps and games, including a “demo wall” that will showcase the VR experience to those watching while a user wears the Quest 2.

Meta has not discussed if it intends to expand the physical stores outside of the single location or what other products will be available.

Meta is trying to expand its commerce efforts in the real word and within the metaverse. The company announced a test program to allow influencers on its Horizon Worlds VR program to sell virtual goods in special circumstances.
