‘Chuck, this is serious’: Patrick Leahy calls for ‘urgent’ hearing on White House attacks on DOJ, FBI

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is urging Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, to schedule an “urgent” Judiciary Committee hearing on the Trump administration’s “escalating politicized attacks” of the Justice Department and the FBI.

“During my four decades in the Senate, I have never before seen our nation’s career, apolitical law enforcement officials so personally and publicly maligned by politicians — indeed, by our president,” he wrote in a note alongside the letter, which was initially dated Jan. 30 but made public Saturday.

The letter contained a hand-written note, “Chuck, this is serious.”

Leahy released his letter after Attorney General Sessions fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe less than 48 hours before he was scheduled to collect his pension. President Trump praised the move and accused McCabe of “lies and corruption.”

Leahy said in a note Saturday that he was concerned about the independence of special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

“What we are seeing today is dangerous, and demands our immediate attention,” Leahy wrote. “I believe the Judiciary Committee will fail to fulfill its core oversight responsibility if it does nothing in this moment.”
