Lt. Col. Melanie McClure, the principal of Enterprise Elementary School in Dale City, will be honored in a ceremony later today as she returns from active duty in the Iraq War.
Lt. Col. McClure boasts an impressive — and lengthy — military and educational background. She graduated from James Madison University in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, then joined the U.S. Army Reserves.
She deployed to serve in Germany, then returned and began teaching in the Fairfax County Public School System. After Sept. 11, 2001, McClure served in Alexandria until July 2003, and then returned to Kent Gardens Elementary School in McLean as an assistant principal and principal. She took on her current role as principal of Enterprise Elementary School in 2007.
McClure’s service “stands as an example to her students of the bravery of our military’s men and women and will instill in future generations an appreciation for the needs of our nation’s veterans,” said U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., in a Congressional Record statement.
