Disney unveils plan to develop residential communities

Disney fans now never need to leave “The Happiest Place on Earth.”

The entertainment company unveiled plans on Wednesday to build residential communities under “Storyliving by Disney,” with the first to be located in Rancho Mirage, California, at the doorsteps of where Walt and Lillian Disney owned a home.

“All new Disney branded master-planned residential communities designed to be the perfect setting for Disney fans to write the next exciting chapter in their lives,” Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products Josh D’Amaro said in an announcement video.

The first location, “Cotino,” will have about 1,900 housing units, including villas, condos, homes, etc. The community will feature a lagoon, shopping, a clubhouse with Disney-centric programming, a beachfront hotel, and more.

Disney said that each location, including some with neighborhoods designed for residents 55 years and older, will have “distinctly designed” spaces and amenities.

Despite Disney branding and marketing these communities, they will each be built in partnership with third-party developers, as reported by USA Today.

DMB Development has been chosen to develop Cotino. The company has built other planned communities, including Silverleaf in Arizona.

The company did not provide a timeline for when Cotino or future locations might be ready for residents.

Storyliving by Disney will not be the company’s first residential development. Disney opened the planned community “Celebration” near Walt Disney World Resort in 1996 but has since sold the downtown to private investors.

Disney did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
