Former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced Tuesday that she is backing Sen. John McCain for what would be a sixth term to the U.S. Senate.
Brewer, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, made the announcement in a video released Tuesday, touting him as an “Arizona treasure” and a “war hero,” as well as for his work as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
“There are very few things we can be confident about in the ever-changing world we live in. But one thing I know: The United States of America and the people of Arizona are safer with John McCain in the Senate,” Brewer said, asking others to do the same.
Along with Brewer, McCain also earned the endorsements of former Arizona Govs. J. Fife Symington and Jane Hull.
While Brewer supports McCain, she has been one of Trump’s more visible and high-profile supporters, having endorsed him largely for his stance on illegal immigration.
Her endorsement comes at the expense of Dr. Kelli Ward, a Tea Partier who is challenging McCain for the GOP nod to likely face Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick in November. McCain currently leads Kirkpatrick by a 5.5 percentage point margin (41-35.5 percent), according to the latest RealClearPolitics average.
