Trump trounces GOP rivals in hypothetical 2020 challenge

President Trump would have an easy time fending off a primary challenge from Republican rivals in the 2020 election, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

A Hill.TV American Barometer survey found 67 percent of Republican voters would back Trump over 14 percent who said they would support Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Retiring Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake garnered just 9 percent of support compared with Trump’s 70 percent in a hypothetical matchup.

Flake said earlier this month he was considering a challenge to Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020. He also pointed to Kasich and Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska as possible contenders. All three have been critical of the president.

Sasse had 8 percent of support in Tuesday’s poll. Outgoing United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley was supported by 13 percent of Republican voters, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had 17 percent support. Haley has said she has no plans to run in 2020.

Retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan and incoming Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who ran as a ticket in the 2012 presidential election, had 20 percent and 19 percent support, respectively.

The poll was conducted Nov. 16-17 among 1,001 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
