Former Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday joked about speculation he was speaking at an event in New Hampshire because he harbored presidential ambitions.
“There are some assumptions about why I am here in New Hampshire,” Holder quipped to laughter during an appearance at Saint Anselm College’s New Hampshire Institute of Politics “Politics and Eggs” speaker series.
Holder, an Obama administration alum, then he said he was there to discuss his role on the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, as well as to “talk about the issues that I see here in New Hampshire.”
Chief among those matters were perceived gerrymandering problems, including the state’s 2nd Executive Council District that is described as a “dragon.”
Holder, insisting his anti-gerrymandering project was not designed to help Democrats but is “a partisan attempt at good government,” also took the opportunity to criticize President Trump.
“It’s not about making this country great again. This country is great. But it can be better,” he said.

In an interview on the eve of his address, Holder confirmed he was “thinking about” a presidential bid and would “try to decide early next year,” according to Fox News.
“Politics and Eggs” program is considered a smart stop for people contemplating or running for president, given that New Hampshire holds the country’s first primary in election cycles.
Holder was attorney general from 2009 to 2015, and was the first African American to hold the position.
