Two teenage girls have been charged with felony murder and armed carjacking in relation to the Tuesday death of an Uber Eats driver in Washington, D.C., police say.
Mohammad Anwar, 66, of Springfield, Virginia, died on Monday after a rollover car crash. The two minors, aged 13 and 16, whose names have not been released, are accused of attempting to steal Anwar’s car and tasering him, an incident that resulted in his death, according to a Wednesday statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.
Anwar was transported to a local hospital but was later declared dead after lifesaving measures failed. The two girls were arrested on Tuesday.
“He was a hardworking immigrant who came to the U.S. in 2014 to build a better life for himself and his family. The loss for his family is immeasurable,” Anwar’s family said in a statement, calling the purported crime “senseless.”
“We are devastated by this tragic news and our hearts go out to Mohammad’s family during this difficult time,” Uber said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “We’re grateful the suspects have been arrested and thank the Metropolitan Police Department for their diligence with this investigation.”
The company confirmed that Anwar was making an Uber Eats delivery at the time of the incident.
