Sam Donaldson claimed that President Trump’s supporters have a “fixation” on fighting diversity and making sure the country stays white and Christian.
“I mean, ‘lock her up,’ I mean, all the things he says, all the vicious, mean things he says, they love it,” the former ABC News anchor said Sunday on CNN after he was asked if Trump rallies were “representative of all of America.”
“They have this fixation. They want to return this country to the white Christian country that they believe it should be again,” he continued. “They don’t want the diversity, and they follow him for this, but they’re not the country. We are a diverse people. We are good and strong because of that, and we’re going to come back to that, I assure you.”
Donaldson, 85, worked at ABC News from 1967 to 2013 and is well known for his work as a White House Correspondent at the network. He has been a fierce critic of the Trump administration, saying earlier this year that the president’s former press secretary Sarah Sanders should get a “lifetime achievement Oscar for lying.”
Donaldson predicted Trump would be impeached and successfully removed by the Senate with Republican votes if public opinion continues to swing against the president.
