Couple gives play-by-play of catching a falling cat with American flag at football game

The couple who helped save a cat by catching the animal in an American flag after it plunged from the upper deck at a Miami Hurricanes football game over the weekend says it was a no-brainer to assist the falling feline.

Kimberly and Craig Cromer took swift action when they saw the cat dangling from the upper deck at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.

“Really, our only choice was to either try to catch the animal, or it was going to fall on us,” Kimberly said, according to WSVN.

Craig explained the couple always brings an American flag to football games.

“My wife takes the U.S. flag with us to all of our football games, and we normally zip tie it to the handrail, and so we snatched it off the handrail and used it to break the cat’s fall,” he said.

Dylan Marinov, a University of Miami freshman who captured the viral video of the save, talked about what moved him to start recording.

“The cat was up there for like 20, 25 minutes, and it wasn’t really moving,” Marinov said. “I wasn’t recording in the beginning because nothing was really happening, but then it started moving a lot, so then I thought, ‘What if it falls?’ So then I started recording, and after a few minutes, it ended up losing its balance and ended up falling.”

The cat struggled for its grip on the upper deck, before losing it and falling directly into the flag below. The crowd roared with applause and cheers as other people picked up the cat and showed it to the rest of the stadium.

Craig noted how invested the crowd was in the cat’s well-being and how the fans who picked it up after the flag broke its fall did not seem to care about the scratching or biting from the undoubtedly frightened animal.

“It was good to save the cat. The students were obviously very passionate about it, and you could tell that because, after the cat fell, they were quick to snatch it up,” Craig said. “They didn’t care that they got bitten or scratched or anything.”

Kimberly said she believes anybody in their position would have acted the same way to save the cat.

“I wouldn’t consider myself a hero. I think anybody sitting in that seat would have done it,” Kimberly said.

Manny Diaz, the Hurricanes head coach, joked about adding the cat to his team.

“I’ll tell you, if the cat can help us in our red-zone offense, I’ll see if we can get him a scholarship,” Diaz quipped.
