Pelosi calls on Cuomo to resign

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined the growing list of Democrats calling on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign following an investigation that concluded he had sexually harassed women in his office.

“Recognizing his love of New York and the respect for the office he holds, I call upon the governor to resign,” Pelosi said hours after New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a monthslong investigation found that Cuomo had harassed a multitude of women.

Pelosi, a California Democrat, joined Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York in calling on Cuomo to step down in response to the bombshell report.

Schumer and fellow New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand have previously called on Cuomo to resign.

Pelosi, a longtime ally of Cuomo’s, waited until Tuesday, citing the findings of the five-month investigation by James.

“Under Attorney General Letitia James, a comprehensive and independent investigation into the allegations against Gov. Cuomo has been completed,” Pelosi said. “As always, I commend the women who came forward to speak their truth.”

Pelosi and Cuomo have been political allies for decades. Pelosi chaired the host committee for the 1984 Democratic National Convention held in San Francisco. New York’s then-Gov. Mario Cuomo, father of the current governor, delivered the convention’s keynote address.

Pelosi’s call for Cuomo’s resignation signals that he has lost all Democratic allies on Capitol Hill. The New York Democratic congressional delegation is also seeking his resignation.

Cuomo has not heeded calls for his resignation and insisted Tuesday that the charges against him are not true.
