Nine people shot dead in Dayton, Ohio

Police said nine people were killed and at least 16 more were injured in an early Sunday shooting in downtown Dayton, Ohio, less than a day after a deadly mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.

Dayton Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper announced in an early morning press conference the shooter was shot dead by responding police offers and they are working to identify the suspect.

Carper said as he does not believe there is a remaining threat to the public, but authorities are still investigating and the FBI is on the scene to assist. Carper also said the shooter was firing a “long gun” with multiple rounds.

Unconfirmed eyewitness accounts indicated a person who was denied entry at a bar opened fire. Police said the shooting took place after 1 a.m.

One medical center in the Dayton area, Miami Valley Hospital, confirmed receiving 16 victims from the shooting.

Journalists arriving on the scene shared video on social media showing a large presence of police and medical personnel near the Dublin Pub. It is unclear where exactly the shooting took place in the Oregon District of Dayton, which features restaurants, shopping, and entertainment.

Another local bar, Ned Peppers, posted on Instagram a brief message that said, “all of our staff is safe and our hearts go out to everyone involved as we gather information.”

Dayton is located approximately 55 miles northeast of Cincinnati.

The reported shooting took place after a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso late Saturday morning. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced in the evening that 20 people were killed, and police said 26 others were injured and have been taken to local hospitals for treatment. Police detained a suspect they said was a 21-year-old white man from Allen, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. Although police have not confirmed the exact identity of the suspect, a law enforcement source in El Paso told the Washington Examiner that Patrick Crusius is the name of the individual taken into custody.

Rep. Ted Lieu, a Democrat from California, commenting on the two shootings less than two days apart, tweeted, “The policies of [President Trump] & his enablers have not made us safer. Time to give others a chance. Vote out those who do nothing about gun violence.”
