Ukrainian sailor admits to trying to destroy Russian boss’s yacht

A Ukrainian sailor in Spain admitted to attempting to destroy his Russian boss’s yacht as retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

D. Taras O., a 55-year-old Ukrainian sailor who worked as a mechanic aboard the yacht Lady Anastasia, tried to open valves in the vessel’s engine room in an attempt to sink the ship. Spanish Civil Guard officers arrested him on Sunday after he turned himself in, only to be released later on bail.

“I don’t regret anything I’ve done, and I would do it again.” the sailor told local judges, reported Majorca Daily Bulletin.

The yacht was partially sunk and left with a damaged engine room.

“My boss is a criminal who sells weapons that kill the Ukrainian people,” the sailor alleged after turning himself in.

The Lady Anastasia is owned by Alexander Mikheev, director-general of Rosoboronexport, a state intermediary agency in Russia that assists in exporting and importing weapons across Russian borders.

Taras said he attempted to sink the vessel after seeing news footage of Russia invading Ukraine. “I watched the news about the war. There was a video of a helicopter attack on a building in Kyiv. The armaments used are produced by the yacht owner’s company. They were attacking innocents.”

Russian companies are facing increased scrutiny from European regulators. The European Union announced that it was closing its airspace to Russian aircraft on Sunday and that it was pursuing additional sanctions against Russian entities.

Mikheev and Rosoboronexport did not respond to requests for comment from the Washington Examiner.
