A Philadelphia man, who was released from prison on Thursday, was shot and killed after a gunman chased him back on to prison property, police said.
Rodney Hargrove, 20, was released from Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Holmesburgat, Pennsylvania, at around 1 a.m., the city’s prison commissioner Blanche Carney said during a news conference.
He was then brought by officers to a drop-off zone at a bus stop outside the main gate of the prison, where he awaited a ride from his family.
Carney said roughly 47 minutes after Hargrove’s release, a vehicle began chasing Hargrove, causing him to run back toward prison grounds.

The prison commissioner said the car chased Hargrove through the raised arm of the prison’s main gate. Shots were fired from the vehicle, killing him before driving away. He was pronounced dead at 2:07 a.m. local time.
Philadelphia’s 8th District Homicide Detection Division told the Washington Examiner an investigation over the shooting is “active and ongoing.”

Prison guards stationed at a nearby shack did not see the shooting take place. They saw a dark-colored sedan speeding away from the grounds after shots were heard, Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told a local FOX affiliate.
Small said Hargrove was shot several times in the upper body and was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived.
