Autism funding bill advances in Virginia House

A bill that would extend health care coverage to include the diagnosis and treatment of autism in children cleared a procedural hurdle before the full House of Delegates Tuesday.

“We’re dealing with a very serious issue here,” said Del. Tim Hugo, R-Fairfax. “It is what we need to do.”

The legislation would extend coverage to children ages 2-6 with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD.

Also in the General Assembly Tuesday, bills in the House and Senate that would allow inmate labor to be used at highway rest stops in Virginia advanced to final votes in each chamber. And the House signed off on a bill requiring local school boards to offer physical education classes in elementary and middle schools; the Senate has already approved similar legislation.
