Americans experience renewed worry about crime under Joe Biden: Poll

Americans are experiencing renewed worry about crime under President Joe Biden‘s watch, according to a new Gallup poll.

Anxiety over crime has increased in recent years, with 80% of respondents reporting they are concerned a “great” or “fair” amount in 2022.

The number of those concerned a “great deal” has also seen a bump, reaching its previous high from 2016, with 53% reporting they share the sentiment. Twenty-seven percent reported they worry a “fair amount.”

Between 2016 and 2020, worries began to decline. Since 2020, however, the number has begun to climb again. Those reporting the most worry about crime are women, city residents, and Republicans, according to data.

This worry comes as national crime data show the U.S. homicide rate reaching its highest rate in 25 years.

Concern about crime has surpassed those of illegal immigration, the deficit, and the environment, among other things. The issue came close to the top of Gallup’s 14 national concerns list in March.

Gallup began tracking the sentiment in 2001 when worry was at its highest: 88%. Sixty-two percent expressed they worried a “great deal.” The number reached its lowest in 2014 before beginning to spike again, Gallup reported.

The recent poll was conducted between March 1-18.

A crime wave in New York City has no end in sight, with one report noting major crimes in February spiked almost 60% from its reported numbers in 2021.
