Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state, New York senator, and first lady, is running for president. Clinton, a Democrat, announced Sunday afternoon with a video showcasing numerous Americans “getting ready” for something—retirement, a baby, school. The video ends with Clinton saying, “I’m getting ready to do something, too.”
“I’m running for president,” Clinton says. Watch the video below:
The video echoes the name of the pre-campaign organization dedicated to encouraging Clinton to run for president, Ready for Hillary.
Clinton’s announcement offers clues of what kind of message her campaign will focus on.
“Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times, but the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top,” Clinton says, speaking to the camera in front of her home in Chappaqua. “Everyday Americans need a champion, and I want to be that champion.”
Images of many different familes flash across the screen as Clinton says, “Because when families are strong, America is strong.”
“So I’m hitting the road to earn your vote, because it’s your time and I hope you’ll join me on this journey,” Clinton concludes. The logo for the Clinton campaign appears, showing a stylized “H” with a forward-facing arrow.
Among those everday Americans featured in the clip are a single mother, a young family expecting a child, a college student, two gay couples, an interracial couple, and a factory worker.
