An Amish man was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation after he was convicted of molesting and raping his daughters.
Michael A. Kauffman, 40, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, received his sentencing on Tuesday after reaching a plea deal in May. He was convicted of sexually abusing his three daughters over eight years, which the principle of silence in the family’s Amish community helped to cover up.
“This all is nothing but a silent scream that will split my soul wide open,” his ex-wife, Audrey Kauffman, said at the sentencing hearing. “He is no father. He is a monster.”

The victimized daughters told their mother about the abuse in 2019. The family was at the time part of the New Order Amish, and Audrey Kauffman was supposed to forgive her husband and resolve the matter within the community. She instead reported the allegations to law enforcement, leading to harassment from the Amish community.

Michael Kauffman pleaded no contest to the charges, including statutory sexual assault. He did not speak when given the opportunity at the sentencing.
“It’s very clear you’re not taking responsibility for your actions,” the judge said. “It’s despicable you have nothing to say. I’m conflicted because five years is not enough for you.”
