Montgomery Council faces more political heat

Montgomery County Council members are already taking political heat for the $4.3 billion budget passed last week.

Now, challenger Ilaya Hopkins is criticizing Democratic Councilman Roger Berliner, Bethesda, for his vote on the budget, calling him “absent” and “ineffective.”

In an e-mail to voters, Hopkins writes, “Montgomery County is buckling under the pressure of an unsustainable budget that has gone unchecked. My opponent has voted for every fiscal operating budget since being elected which has resulted in unimaginable deficits, fleeing businesses, deteriorating roads, overcrowded schools.”

Berliner, and the majority of the council, say they found a way to maintain government services while minimizing the tax burden on residents amid unprecedented financial pressure.
