Stimulus update: New $270 direct ‘family’ benefit payment to be sent out this month in New York

People living in New York could receive $270 before the end of October.

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul announced last month that the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance would be sending out the additional child and earned income tax payments by the end of this month as a means to combat rising inflation. It is estimated that 1.75 million New York residents will receive this payment.

“With this relief package, we’re making good on our commitment to helping hardworking New Yorkers through the nationwide affordability crisis,” Hochul said. “This program will put money back in the pockets of nearly 2 million New York families struggling to make ends meet in the face of the pandemic, inflation, and other rising costs. … I thank the legislature for its partnership in ensuring that New York families get this much-needed financial assistance.”

Hochul and members of the state legislature approved the Additional NYS Child and Earned Income Tax Payment as part of the state’s fiscal year 2023 budget.

Checks will be distributed automatically. Residents who received at least $100 in 2021 from an Empire State child credit or income credit and filed a state income tax return by April 18, 2021, do not need to take any further action, according to New York’s website.
