Colombia declares Zika outbreak over

Colombia’s Zika outbreak has ended, as health officials said that the number of cases of the mosquito-borne illness has dissipated.

The country’s health minister told reporters Monday that the cases have been dropping by 600 a week, Reuters said. The country has had nearly 75,000 suspected cases of Zika in the outbreak.

However, the latest Zika report for the week of July 10 to 16 shows about 463 cases reported. There were 21 cases of microcephaly associated with the Zika viruses, and nearly 200 of the cases are still being investigated.

The national incidence rate of Zika is 317 cases per 100,000 people.

A study released Monday found that up to 93 million people could get Zika in Latin American and Caribbean countries over the next couple of years.
