Biden has double-digit lead over 2020 Democratic rivals, poll shows

Joe Biden is enjoying one of his largest leads over the rest of the Democratic field since joining the presidential race, a new poll finds.

A CNN survey conducted by SSRS finds that 34% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters currently back the former vice president to unseat President Trump in November. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts sits in second place, with 19% support. Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont placed third with 16%.

The rest of the pack is even further behind, with Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, and California Sen. Kamala Harris earning 6% support, while Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke garnered 3% support.

CNN/SSRS interviewed more than 1,003 Democratic voters for the poll Oct. 17-20, which has a +/- 3.7 margin of error.

Much of Biden’s rise in support appears to come from him continuing to consolidate moderate and conservative Democrats, of which 43% support him. In September, he earned 29% of their support.

Black voters — which underpin Biden’s strategy to win Southern primary states — also seem more enthusiastic about his candidacy than just a month ago, with 42% backing him compared to just 28% in September.

The latest poll comes after Biden has found himself steadily losing his front-runner status to Warren over the last few months. A RealClearPolitics average has Biden maintaining a lead over Warren of nearly six points.

Yet CNN’s survey also appears to be an outlier of sorts. A Quinnipiac poll released earlier this month showed Warren leading Biden by three points nationally, an Economist survey released around the same time had her leading by four.

Despite CNN’s findings, Biden’s support hasn’t translated to donations. His current campaign burn rate sits at 112%, with only $9 million in the bank. Warren, who has outraised Biden, currently sits on $25.7 million.
